Task force seizes about 30 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms in the Bronx
On April 30, 2026, a DEA-led task force with the NYPD and State Police reported seizing about 30 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, along with cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, marijuana and about $85,000 in cash, from a home near Yankee Stadium. Two Bronx men face state felony charges, a reminder that psilocybin is still prosecuted as a controlled substance in New York City.

The Bronx, April 30, 2026. At about 9:15 a.m., the DEA's New York Task Force Group T-43, made up of DEA agents and investigators from the NYPD and New York State Police, entered an apartment in a split family home near Yankee Stadium under a court-authorized search warrant, the DEA said in a May 4 release. Investigators from the Office of the Special Narcotics Prosecutor took part.1
What the task force says it found
According to the DEA release, the search turned up:1
- about 30 pounds of psilocybin mushrooms;
- about 2.5 kilograms of cocaine, ketamine and MDMA combined, including a kilogram of cocaine in an office closet, more cocaine in plain view and more than 1.5 kilograms of ketamine;
- more than 100 pounds of marijuana, including edibles;
- about $85,000 in cash, stacked near a money counting machine.
These are the agencies' figures, not lab results. "The results of DEA laboratory analysis on the recovered substances are pending," the release says.1
What the two men are charged with
Both men, who the release says live at the home, were arraigned late on April 30 in Manhattan Criminal Court. A complaint filed by the Special Narcotics Prosecutor charges each with one count of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the first degree and one count in the third degree, and the release says more charges were expected. It also says the charges "are merely accusations, and the defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty."1 We aren't naming them.
The release doesn't say which drug supports which count. Under Penal Law section 220.21, first-degree possession, a class A-I felony, covers narcotic drugs weighing eight ounces or more and methadone.2 Psilocybin isn't in that category: the Penal Law classes psilocybin and psilocyn as "hallucinogens."3 Third-degree possession, a class B felony under section 220.16, includes holding a hallucinogen above a set weight, or above a lower set weight with intent to sell.4 Our penalties guide lays out every weight threshold and sentence range.
"Illegal drug trafficking rings that place New Yorkers at risk have no business in our city," NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said in the release. The case is handled by Special Narcotics Prosecutor Bridget G. Brennan's office, and the release thanks Bronx District Attorney Darcel D. Clark.1
How often psilocybin charges show up in NYC
The NYPD's public arrest data don't name psilocybin, but they do record the Penal Law subdivision of each arrest's top charge. We counted arrests whose top charge was one of the "hallucinogen" weight or sale subdivisions: 144 citywide in 2025, 21 of them in the Bronx, and 79 from January to June 2026.5, 6 Treat those as a rough gauge. The legal category also includes a few other drugs, and an arrest whose top charge is a first-degree count, as in this case, wouldn't appear in it.3, 5
