Which psilocybin clinical trials are recruiting in New York?

As of November 2, 2026, 12 psilocybin or psilocybin-like studies were recruiting at a New York site, most of them at NYU Langone and Mount Sinai in Manhattan and the VA hospital in the Bronx. Below is every one of the 30 studies on ClinicalTrials.gov with a site in New York State: its status, its conditions and how to reach the study team.

Where things stand

ClinicalTrials.gov lists 30 interventional studies that give psilocybin or a close relative of it and have at least one site in New York State. Of those, 12 are recruiting at a New York site now, 4 haven't started recruiting, and 10 are finished.1 Outside a registered study, possessing any amount of psilocybin in New York is a crime under Penal Law 220.03.15

Two things to know before you read the list. First, 6 of the 30 studies don't give psilocybin. They test CYB003, which the registry calls "a deuterated psilocin analog," or RE104, a prodrug of 4-OH-DiPT, a synthetic psychedelic similar in structure to psilocin.3 We mark each one "psilocybin-like compound"; the "Psilocybin only" filter hides them. Second, each record's enrollment figure is the whole trial's total across every site, not the number of New Yorkers taking part: an actual count for finished trials, a target for open ones.1

Every psilocybin trial with a New York site

Recruiting studies come first. Tap one for its sponsor, phase, ages and a link to its registry record, which has the contact details. "Recruiting elsewhere, not at the New York site" means the trial is open, but not here.

Most sites are in Manhattan and the Bronx, with a few in Brooklyn, Staten Island and the Buffalo area. A study can list several sites, so the counts overlap.1

NYU's opioid study also runs at StartCare in Brooklyn and VIP Community Services in the Bronx, and Compass Pathways' PTSD trial (NCT07570654) is recruiting at sites the registry lists only as "NY" in Manhattan and the Bronx.2 NYU Langone opened its Center for Psychedelic Medicine in February 2021.4 Mount Sinai's center, launched in January 2021 and now the Parsons Research Center for Psychedelic Healing, expanded into a new facility at 600 West 112th Street in 2024.5 Columbia's Depression Evaluation Service says it has "several studies in development" with psychedelics.6

Landmark psilocybin studies run in New York

New York sites helped produce several of the results that put psilocybin into late-stage trials. Each finding is from the published paper, not advice.

Published psilocybin studies with a New York site
StudyNew York roleWhat it found
Cancer-related anxiety and depression, J Psychopharmacol 2016 (PMID 27909164)Run at NYUIn 29 patients, 83% of the psilocybin-first group had an antidepressant response at seven weeks, against 14% of the niacin-first group. About 4.5 years later, 60% to 80% of the 15 followed up met criteria for a clinically significant response.7
Alcohol use disorder, JAMA Psychiatry 2022 (PMID 36001306)Led by NYUAmong 95 adults, heavy-drinking days over 32 weeks were 9.7% with psilocybin and 23.6% with an antihistamine placebo. In a 2026 extension with 59 adults, heavier drinkers' gains faded after a month.8
Treatment-resistant depression, NEJM 2022 (PMID 36322843)NYSPI, one of 25 sites in the registry record1In 233 people, the highest of three doses cut depression scores 6.6 points more than a very low control dose at week 3.9
Major depression, JAMA 2023 (PMID 37651119)NYU was one of 11 sitesIn 104 adults, depression scores were 12.3 points lower with psilocybin than with niacin at day 43.10
Body dysmorphic disorder, J Psychiatr Res 2023 (PMID 37004409)Sponsored and run by NYSPIIn an open-label pilot, 7 of 12 adults responded by week 12.11
PTSD, J Psychopharmacol 2026 (PMID 40883964)Mount Sinai site; Yehuda a coauthorIn 22 people, PTSD scores fell an average of 29.9 points by week 4, with no control group.12
Clergy, Psychedelic Medicine 2025 (PMID 41869007)NYU arm with Johns HopkinsOf 24 clergy who completed both sessions, 96% rated one among the five most spiritually significant experiences of their lives.13

Two later trials will shape what comes next. In February 2026, Compass Pathways reported that its second phase 3 trial of COMP360, its synthetic psilocybin, beat a very low control dose by 3.8 points on the MADRS depression scale at week 6, in 581 people with treatment-resistant depression; its first had beaten placebo by 3.6 points. These are company-reported results, not yet peer-reviewed, and Compass expected to finish its FDA application in the fourth quarter of 2026.14 New York sites, including NYSPI, took part in both.1 Our guide to psilocybin therapy in NYC explains what an approval would change here.

How to find and screen for a trial in New York

Each study team decides who's eligible. This is what the New York records describe.

  1. Search. Use the list above, or search ClinicalTrials.gov for psilocybin with the location set to New York and the status to "Recruiting."
  2. Check the New York site's own status. A trial can be recruiting overall while its New York site isn't: NYU's site on the Johns Hopkins tobacco trial (NCT05452772) is listed as active, not recruiting.2
  3. Contact the team. Each registry record has a "Contacts and Locations" section. NYU's Center for Psychedelic Medicine lists its open studies on its research page.4 Columbia's Depression Evaluation Service asks people interested in its studies to call 646-774-8000.6 Mount Sinai's depression study lists its Depression and Anxiety Center, (212) 241-6539.2
  4. Expect several screening visits: a psychiatric interview, medical history, physical exam, ECG and lab tests, plus an MRI safety check for imaging studies. Mount Sinai's trauma study also asks for someone "who will be able to accompany them home and stay the night."2
  5. Don't change your medicines first. The same study says applicants "should not stop, taper, or otherwise change prescribed medications before speaking with the study team."2

Common reasons people are screened out

NYU's alcohol study and Mount Sinai's depression and trauma studies share most of their exclusions:2

  • Psychosis, mania or bipolar disorder, in you or in a parent, sibling or child.
  • Active suicidal intent, or a recent medically serious suicide attempt.
  • Heart disease, arrhythmia or high blood pressure that isn't controlled.
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • Recent psychedelic use: two of the three exclude anyone who used a classic psychedelic in the past year.
  • Interacting medicines: Mount Sinai's depression study excludes antipsychotics, serotonergic antidepressants and mood stabilizers, among others.

Most trials take adults 18 and over; several start at 21, and one at NYU takes only healthy adults 65 to 85.1 Many are randomized, so you may get a placebo instead of psilocybin. Our safety and help page covers risks outside a trial.

How we built this list, and why records go stale

On November 2, 2026, we queried the ClinicalTrials.gov API for psilocybin, psilocin, COMP360, CYB003, RE104 and related terms, kept every study with a New York State site, and removed four text matches that don't give psilocybin. A study counts as recruiting only if it's recruiting overall and its New York site is open or has no site status.1 Statuses are whatever the sponsor last reported, and some lag:2

  • Mount Sinai's depression study (NCT06592833) was last updated May 14, 2025, but still says recruiting.
  • The estimated start dates of three not-yet-recruiting studies have passed: IBS (NCT06760533), stuttering (NCT07296328) and cancer pain (NCT06827054).
  • The registry gives 347 enrolled for Usona's phase 2 trial (NCT03866174); the JAMA paper reports 104 randomized.10 NYU's clergy record lists 12; the paper reports 29 randomized across NYU and Johns Hopkins.13

If a record looks stale, call the study team. The whole list downloads as CSV or JSON from the link under the records above. MDMA and ketamine studies in the city are on our therapy page, and the Albany bills that would create a medical program are on our bill tracker.

Questions people ask

Is it legal to take psilocybin in a New York clinical trial?

Yes. Researchers giving a Schedule I drug hold a federal research registration under 21 U.S.C. 823, granted after the protocol is reviewed. Outside a study, possessing psilocybin in New York is a class A misdemeanor at minimum.15

Can I join if I've used mushrooms before?

Sometimes. NYU's alcohol study excludes anyone who used a classic psychedelic in the past year or more than 25 times in their life; Mount Sinai's depression study excludes use in the last 12 months.2

Will I definitely get psilocybin if I enroll?

Not in a randomized trial: NYU's alcohol study compared psilocybin with an antihistamine, and Usona's depression trial with niacin.8, 10 Open-label studies, like the Mount Sinai PTSD study, give everyone psilocybin.12
